Jason and I have been popcorn fiends for quite awhile. Even when we were dating in high school popcorn was our favorite after dinner snack, and throughout college we would spend late nights studying (watching television) alongside this treat.
Once we moved into our own place in college we got an air popper. We didn’t even buy it, I think we found it at my parents’ house and since they never used it we figured we’d get some mileage out of it. We haven’t looked back since.
For one thing, air popped popcorn tastes a lot better. It doesn’t leave a weird coating on the inside of your mouth. It’s not in a greasy bag that has who knows what inside of it. In Iowa we can buy locally grown popcorn in a bag and pop it ourselves at home. No microwave or greasy bag necessary. We don’t have to smother it with butter either, so it’s a lot healthier. Usually at home we use a little Earth Balance or just some salt and seasonings. After awhile I even started liking popcorn totally plain.
Taste aside, making the switch to air-popped is also a lot better for the environment. From a packaging standpoint alone our popcorn kernels come in one bag so have a lot less waste involved than the individually wrapped microwave popcorn bags. We can also buy bigger bags less frequently as opposed to a new box of microwave popcorn every one to two weeks (I’m serious, we really love popcorn). And if you’re wondering, yes, buying in bulk is cheaper to so it also makes more economic sense.
If you haven’t made the switch yet, what’s stopping you?
