This week is a week off from health and weight loss for me. I need some time to relax after all of the wedding stress and this is my last week without a job, so I’ve spent a lot of time at the fair indulging and having a good time. I have weighed myself once and luckily my weight hasn’t fluctuated much. I’m sure after the fair I can do a little detox and go back to normal.
But yesterday I was a little over the deep-fried fair foods and wanted something fresh, so I headed to the two stands you can always count on for semi healthy fair foods. The Salad Bowl and Applishus.
The PB & J on a stick was the first thing I went after. It’s only $2 and 467 calories*, which is a great deal for the fair! I felt fairly full after eating this and it was a fun lunch. Obviously the deterrent for this one is, well I can make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich anytime. I’m at the fair! But if you are looking for something slightly healthier but just as filling as a corn dog this is a good item to go after.
Later in the day I had a Salad on a Stick, which has been around for a while. I’ve never tried it, and honestly I don’t know if I would ever get it again. It was refreshing to have the fresh wet lettuce, but this is super overpriced. At $5 I’m surprised people buy these. But I guess I bought one. It’s only 18 calories without salad dressing, and while it’s nice to get a vegetable that isn’t deep fat fried, I did not feel full for long.
After the Salad we went to the wine and cheese tent, which was so fun! Unfortunately my sangria was a little watered down, so it seems that sticking to the samples is the best idea. We had four samples of wine ($1 each) and shared a cheese and cracker snack ($3). It was nice to be able to sit for a while and just enjoy the Iowa wines and cheeses. I think this is one of the best places to visit at the fair (if you are 21+ of course).
Of course, by the evening I was eating chocolate chip cookies and sweet potato fries again!
But it’s okay, because I went to The Depot and danced it off until midnight when it was time to go home.
Seriously guys, the fair is better than Christmas.
